Baltimore Comic Con pt 2
I still get a little upset everytime I drive or go up in to Baltimore, because one of my favorite hangouts, Hammerjacks, got destroyed to make way for the Raven's stadium. That's neither here nor there, just something I thought about on the way in to Baltimore.
As we pulled up to the station before the Convention Center stop, I looked out the window and saw the Convention Center. I decided "Hey it's right there, let's get out and we'll just walk over from here."
Before this descision I didn't know that the Baltimore Convention Center takes up and entire city block. Now I know this quite well. The stop we used was the exact opposite side of the Center from where the Convention was being held.
As bad as things seemed standing in this line, it only took us about 40 minutes to get in the convention, so I guess it didn't turn out too bad having to wait a little while. I also learned another lesson. Much like buying comics, if you're going to a convention....pre-order, pre-order, pre-order.

Proof #22

story ALEX GRECIAN art & cover RILEY ROSSMO
As the "Julia" arc continues we see what happens after the events leading up to Julia and Lent leaving the circus in the wake of the Springheel Jack reveal. The story begins with Proof and Ginger traveling back to the lodge. As the story unfolds we get a chance to see the depths of Lent's depravity in dealing with his wife and newborn child. While I don't want to give anything away here, I will say that this episode left me with an emotional feeling toward a character that few if any comics have ever elicited. It ends on a cliffhanger that doesn't look good for the future of Thomas Lent, and could further the developments that become the rift between Proof (Gulliver) and Mi-Chen-Po (Gilgamesh).

Proof #20, Julia part three

This issue opens up with a surprising reveal about Springheel Jack and his father. As we find him working on a twin. Then it moves right in to Gilgamesh's response to the attack on the carnival and his "fathers" collapse. You can already see him becoming the character we know. Proof has his emotional moment with Julia in this issue, and you can feel the emotion in the scene.
This issue also featured a back-up that followed one of my favorite characters in the book, Autumn Song. It showed her quest to meet up the Mi-Chen-Po (Gilgamesh) in Tibet, and it was exciting to see her in action again.
Kelly Tindall also continued his Archie Snow story. I've been reading Archie since Kelly was kind enough to hook me up with his first mini comic, and I really enjoy seeing the adventure unfold. We are revealed a little more of Archie's connecting to the mysterious sword he is holding and a little bit more about his past.
All total three great stories in this issue, and this continues to impress me month in and month out.

Chew #1

Chew #1
Written by John Layman
Art by Rob Guillory
Published by Image Comics
Tony Chu is a cop, and he is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he's a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn't mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim.
That's the premise behind this great new book that came out today. John and Rob did a great job all around on this book and it was quite possibly the best book of the bunch that I picked up today.
Tony's power is a unique idea, and a somewhat gross one, but it's used well in the first issue to make you want to see more. Layman's writing is tight, and keeps the pace of the book fresh and even though it's the first issue you get a great feel for the main character and the supporting characters that will have a role in future issues. Tony's power is a unique idea, and a somewhat gross one, but it's used well in the first issue to make you want to see more.
Guillory's art has a wonderful feel to it, and it is one of my favorite styles. A little cartoony, but completly accessible. He shows great emotion in his characters and the images convey as much of the story as the writing does.
Looking forward to seeing more of what they have in store with this as it progresses.

Nightmare World
He has found a way to match artists strengths with the story he is telling at the time and I have yet to be disappointed with the result. There are some stories that have a straight comic book style, some that have a water color feel to them, there is one so far in a video game style. But it all flows together to make it quite an enjoyable read. Once I check with Dirk to make sure it's ok to put the "cover" pages up I plan on talking a little bit about each story that's out so far. But until then make sure you go over catch up with the comic: http://www.shadowlinecomics.com/webcomics/
And if you want to chat with Dirk, you can find him at www.kris-korner.com in the Nightmare World forum.
Until next time (and hopefully it won't be so long), keep digging comics.

Proof #19
Red! Man the coloring on this issue is fantastic!! The dark, earthen tones of the first few pages where the action isn't going on, followed with the red heavy pages really bring out the energy of the scenes with Jack and Julia. And the brief fight in Julia's (what do you call those?) trailer were amazing. I hope Dave did that on purpose, because it really meshed well with what Riley was drawing for those pages. Even in the aftermath of Jack being there, it carried through. Red highlighting the main points of the story in each panel. That's good stuff right there.
"One of mine....not a man." That statement has had me pouring over every instance that we have seen Jack so far. Not a man? If not for the hair do I would say maybe some type of ape. But the hair is throwing me off. Of course that could be part of his mask. I have faith that if we get to see Jack it'll be something we aren't expecting. Albert Einstein? That's what Jack's "Father" made me think of. And the name on the boat? Any significance there? The ona that we can see made me think of Fiona Staples that colored some issues.
Then the color shift at about the midway point. Going back to "normal" coloring for the parts of the book not involving Jack. I liked the shift, definitely the night and day feel, and it worked great. Gave me a chance to catch my breath and ingest what was going on. Then the page with Proof smacking Lent the red comes out again. You can feel the anger in Proof action. Really looking forward to part 3 of this arc. I know I talked about the coloring alot this time, but it was so good with Riley's art, and Alex's story pacing.
I enjoyed the first back up, and seeing the little demon. Avoid Tibet? Hmmm...was that the snippet we saw in the Foreshadowing back-up? Or is that a seperate event?
And Kelly again bringing the goods with Archie Snow. I like his stories, and they are getting better each little bit we get to see. Plus seeing (oh man I forgot her name, it's late and I'm tired) the medusa again after what happened in the Archie Snow mini comic (yeah you can all be jealous) from a couple years ago was really cool, and it really made me more excited for the next installment. Keep it up Kelly.
And as soon as I learn how I'll start throwing some pics in my blog.

Webcomics
www.shadowlinecomics.com/webcomics
This site contains some of my favorite webcomics.
Nightmare World - A horror comic by Dirk Manning and a plethora of artists. I like this one because Dirk crafts some really good tales with twists and surprises, and packs it in only 8 page stories.
Brat-Halla - A Norse gods comic, with a twist. Most of the gods are children. Done by Jeffery Stevenson, Seth Damoose and Anthony Lee this comic is just fun to read.
Platinum Grit - Written and drawn by Trudy Cooper and Danny Murphy is an interesting tale of two friends that happen into some interesting times. It took me a little while to get in to this one, but after reading the introduction to the series I was hooked. Also Shadowline just published the parts covered in the introduction segment in trade form, so if you really like it and want the whole story you can have it.
There are several others that are good by their own rights, but those are the ones that I read regularly and without fail.
Another great little strip I found out there can be found at ctrlaltdel-online.com/index.php.
While not technically a webcomic it has a couple of extremely funny comics that go along with the site. If you have any video gamer inclinations you should check this out.
Next update we'll be back to comics in print, but I had a few minutes and wanted to get this on "paper".

Comics I Dig vol. 1
Based on a video game series, where the title character is sick of happy fairy tales, he goes out to set them back to the darker original versions. After conquering the fairy tales Grimm is looking for new wrongs to "right". That leads us in to this first issue.
In the first issue Grimm, just finishing up fixing up a fairy tale, comes across a comic book stand. Takes on look at a "superhero" comic, and decides he has new work to accomplish.
The artwork has a video game feel to it. Grant did a great job of translating the game to the paper format and carries it off quite nicely. He mixes comic book style art with digital style representation of Grimm in such a way that it looks like the game is actually taking over the comic book.
The highlight though has to be Dwight's writing. No hero, or villian, for that matter is safe in this romp. With villians like; the Headless Skeleton, Westseid, and Killer Cock opposing heroes like; Flesh (the naked speedster), Captain Trustworthy, and the Spitting Spider I was laughing before I even got to some of the greater observations and quotes that quite literally litter the book.
Highly recommend picking a copy of this great little book, and sitting back and enjoying the ride. It irreverent, fun, and says a lot about the modern comic book. I enjoyed it, and I think you will too.
